John McCain And Barack Obama Slug It Out In Aggressive Second Debate On Economy, Foreign Policy
Neither candidate was afraid to throw a zinger during town-hall-style matchup.
By Gil Kaufman
Senators Barack Obama and John McCain

This was more like it.
If you thought the first debate between presidential candidates John McCain and Barack Obama was more like a polite disagreement on the economy and foreign policy, Tuesday night’s (October 7) second showdown on those same topics found the Senate colleagues staring each other down for a tense 90 minutes during which they tried to draw very clear lines on how their policies differ.
After a bare-knuckle week in which the airwaves were flooded with talk of McCain’s ties to the “Keating Five” savings and loan scandal of the late 1980s and Obama’s relationship with a former 1960s radical became Alaska Governor Sarah Palin’s favorite topic, both candidates avoided those old scandals in favor of focusing on what needs to be done to get the United States economy and military back on track.
But, like the first debate, neither candidate seemed to make a major mistake or land a sound-bite-worthy punch that has the potential to change the race as it speeds toward its November 4 conclusion. What they did do was frequently repeat the same criticisms audiences have heard in their stump speeches and in previous debates, including McCain’s claim that “we don’t have time for on-the-job training.”
And when McCain followed that criticism up — as he did several times in the men’s first debate 12 days ago — by charging that Obama “doesn’t understand” our national-security challenges, the Illinois senator went on the attack in an aggressive way supporters claimed he failed to do during the first debate.
“It’s true,” Obama said. “There are some things I don’t understand. I don’t understand how we ended up invading a country that had nothing to do with 9/11, while Osama bin Laden and al Qaeda are setting up base camps and safe havens to train terrorists to attack us. That was Senator McCain’s judgment, and it was the wrong judgment. When Senator McCain was cheerleading the president to go into Iraq, he suggested it was going to be quick and easy, we’d be greeted as liberators. That was the wrong judgment, and it’s been costly to us.”
In a format that is more comfortable for McCain, the candidates were seated on stools in a small theater on the campus of Belmont University in Nashville, surrounded on three sides by a horseshoe of 80 uncommitted voters who submitted questions, along with queries from Internet users. Moderator Tom Brokaw set up the questions and struggled mightily all night to get the presidential hopefuls to stick to the strict two-minute response and one-minute follow-up times.
The first hour of the debate focused on the economy and domestic-policy issues, with McCain going hard after Obama’s health care plan at one point, claiming the Democrat would impose “mandates” and fine families and businesses that don’t sign up for the plan. “That’s remarkable,” McCain said. “If you’re a parent and you’re struggling to get health insurance for your children, Senator Obama will fine you.”
Taking a page from McCain’s running mate’s book, Obama mostly disregarded the next question on whether health care is a privilege, a right or a responsibility and denied that his plan would impose fines or mandates, explaining, “It’s true that I say that you are going to have to make sure that your child has health care, because children are relatively cheap to insure and we don’t want them going to the emergency room for treatable illnesses like asthma.”
With McCain now trailing in national polls and the economy spiraling further down with each passing day — a situation that most pundits agree favors Obama — both men tried to portray their economic plans as the salve the country needs to get back on its feet, while pointedly tearing down the other’s priorities. Obama lashed McCain for supporting the “failed economic policies of the last eight years” under President Bush, saying the Arizona senator’s plan to provide $300 billion in tax cuts would mostly benefit big business and oil companies.
McCain countered by saying that with the “encouragement of Senator Obama and his cronies and friends in Washington,” the failed mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac made risky loans to people who couldn’t afford them, which served as the “match that lit this fire.” McCain also claimed that Obama was the second highest recipient of Fannie and Freddie money in history. “Some of us stood up against [Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac] and others took a hike.”
Unlike the first debate, where Obama sometimes agreed with McCain before disagreeing with him, in Tuesday night’s showdown, Obama hit back that it was McCain’s actions that were the real catalyst for the meltdown, tarring his opponent with being behind the deregulation of the financial system that helped lead to the sub prime mortgage meltdown. “Now, with respect to Fannie Mae, what Senator McCain didn’t mention is the fact that this bill that he talked about wasn’t his own bill,” Obama said. “He jumped on it a year after it had been introduced and it never got passed. And I never promoted Fannie Mae. In fact, Sen. McCain’s campaign chairman’s firm was a lobbyist on behalf of Fannie Mae, not me.”
Given the rampant distrust of government in light of the financial crisis and skepticism about the recently passed $700 billion bailout plan, an audience member asked how Americans could trust either man with the country’s purse strings. Again attempting to tie McCain to Bush, Obama noted that the country went from record surpluses to historic deficits under Bush and that McCain voted for four out of five of those budgets. He then said his priorities would be to reform the health care system, come up with a new energy plan that cuts our dependence on foreign oil and invest in college affordability.
As he did several times during the evening, McCain took the opportunity to say that, unlike Obama, he has worked with Democrats often over the years and that the situation requires a bipartisan effort. “This is the most liberal big-spending record in the United States Senate,” McCain said of Obama, pointing out that the Senator is proposing $860 billion in new spending and once voted for $3 million for an overhead projector at a planetarium in his native Chicago. “I have fought against excessive spending and outrages. I have fought to reduce the earmarks and eliminate them.”
Neither presidential hopeful was above throwing a zinger at the other. McCain lamented that nailing down Obama’s tax plan was “like nailing Jell-O to a wall,” and in an answer to how he would deal with the looming Social Security crisis, Obama hit back at McCain’s claims about Obama’s tax plans by saying, “I think the ‘Straight Talk Express’ lost a wheel on that one.”
When the topic finally turned to what is perceived as McCain’s strength, foreign policy, in response to a question about whether the United States can still act as the peacemaker of the world given the financial crisis, McCain argued that he has the judgment and experience to make that call, while charging that, “Senator Obama was wrong about Iraq and the surge. He was wrong about Russia when they committed aggression against Georgia. And in his short career, he does not understand our national-security challenges.”
In a follow-up question about whether the U.S. would ignore borders and go after al Qaeda terrorists wherever they were, Obama once again asserted that the U.S. was wrong in going into Iraq in the first place when the job of hunting down terror mastermind Osama bin Laden was not completed, and said, “If we have Osama bin Laden in our sights and the Pakistani government is unable or unwilling to take him out, then I think that we have to act and we will take them out. We will kill bin Laden; we will crush al Qaeda. That has to be our biggest national-security priority.”
Citing president Theodore Roosevelt’s maxim “speak softly, but carry a big stick,” McCain chided Obama’s tactic of talking “loudly,” saying it was wrong to “announce that he’s going to attack Pakistan. Remarkable.” At that point, though there was no time for a follow-up, Obama insisted on one, and Brokaw — who jokingly referred to himself as the “hired help” - agreed to break the format and allow it. Obama then strongly asserted that he never called for an invasion of Pakistan.
“Now, Senator McCain suggests that somehow … I’m green behind the ears and … I’m just spouting off, and he’s somber and responsible,” Obama said. “Senator McCain, this is the guy who sang, ‘Bomb, bomb, bomb Iran,’ who called for the annihilation of North Korea. That I don’t think is an example of ’speaking softly.’ This is the person who, after we had - we hadn’t even finished Afghanistan, where he said, ‘Next up, Baghdad.’ ”
Both men ended with a plea in which they said they were the right person to help put America back on track, with Obama arguing, “We need fundamental change. That’s what’s at stake in this election. That’s the reason I decided to run for president, and I’m hopeful that all of you are prepared to continue this extraordinary journey that we call America. But we’re going to have to have the courage and the sacrifice, the nerve to move in a new direction.”
Leaving their bitter differences aside for the moment, McCain answered Obama’s plea for a greater calling, pledging, “I believe in this country. I believe in its future. I believe in its greatness. It’s been my great honor to serve it for many, many years. And I’m asking the American people to give me another opportunity and I’ll rest on my record, but I’ll also tell you, when times are tough, we need a steady hand at the tiller and the great honor of my life was to always put my country first.”
The final debate will take place at Hofstra University in New York on October 15.

Travis Barker Says He’s ‘Thankful To Be Alive’ In First Post-Crash Interview
‘I am doing the best I can possibly be,’ drummer says of recovery.

Travis Barker said he’s “thankful to be alive” after the plane crash in Columbia, South Carolina, last month that killed four people and seriously injured him and DJ AM. The former Blink-182 drummer opens up about the accident in the new issue of Us Weekly.
“I hate planes,” he said. “My biggest fear ever is to be involved in a plane crash, so when that happened … well, I’m just thankful to be alive! I’m just grateful to be here at all.” Barker then choked up a bit, the mag said.
Barker left a hospital in Georgia last week and returned to Los Angeles via bus with his father and his ex-wife, Shanna Moakler. Just days before, DJ AM had been released from the hospital and is currently recovering at home. The crash killed Barker’s assistant, Chris Baker, and his bodyguard, Charles Still, as well as the plane’s two crew members.
Barker is currently at the Grossman Burn Center in Los Angeles, where he is receiving treatment for second- and third-degree burns.
“I am doing the best I can possibly be. I’m so anxious to get out of here,” the 32-year-old drummer said. “I was in Georgia at the hospital over there and was scared to death to even get on an airplane again, so I had Shanna and my father come out and meet me and we took a bus back to L.A. I’ve just been in surgery after surgery. I have third-degree burns basically from my feet up to my waist and both hands. One of my hands has second-degree burns and one has third-degree burns.”
Barker said he’s anxious to spend more time with his and Moakler’s children, Landon, 5, and Alabama, 2. “Shanna brought them down a couple times, but not on the basis that I normally would [see them],” he said. “Normally I wake up with them at six in the morning and take them to school. I’m just taking this one day at a time and listening to all the doctors’ orders.”
One big change that Barker has made since the accident is changing his diet. He’s broken with his vegetarian regimen in the interest of helping his recovery. “Because I was a vegetarian, for my first three surgeries, it was hard to get any of my grafts to take to my real skin,” he said. “I have such low levels of protein. I need protein from food rather than just protein supplements. I changed my diet. I would do anything I possibly could [to get better]. They said, ‘There’s a possibility you might heal faster if you do eat meat or just change your eating habits.’ So I did. I don’t regret it at all, because I feel so much better!”
The change may already be having a positive effect on his recovery. “I just got out of surgery maybe an hour ago,” he said. “They took pieces from my back and pieces of skin from my thighs and they grafted them onto my feet, my heels and my right forearm and it actually stuck!”
Asked about reports that earlier surgery was not as successful, Barker said, “It was a misunderstanding. I woke up from my surgery with no pain medication at one point! Imagine how that would feel! But the doctors here are amazing.”
As for how much longer he might be in the hospital, Barker optimistically said it shouldn’t be more than two weeks if all goes well. “I hope not much longer. I sit here and read books and watch TV,” he said. “I have had outstanding support from my family and friends. Shanna has been here as much as she could be. I couldn’t do it without them.”
Not only is he optimistic about his recovery, but Barker is ready to get back to work, and most importantly his family. “I can’t wait to get to work on my record. I lost one of my best friends in this crash,” he said. “I can’t wait to get back to writing and expressing myself, get back into the swing of things. I have so much stuff just jumbled in my head right now. I can’t wait!
“I’m trying to have a quick recovery and play the drums again and be able to hold my kids again,” he added.

Britney Spears assumes multiple sassy personalities in the video for her new single “Womanizer,” according to photos released by Jive Records. The video, shot last month in Los Angeles, is set to debut this Friday at 10 p.m. on ABC’s “20/20.”
In one scene from the clip, directed by Joseph Khan (who helmed “Stronger” and “Toxic”), Spears sports her signature blond hair, a sexy bedtime robe and bra. In another photo from the shoot, we see Britney going for a sexy/scary businesswoman look in horn-rimmed glasses, a black bob, leather skirt and striped sweater. She appears to be about to give her co-worker either a lap dance or a beating.
(Check out photos of Britney’s “Womanizer” video here.)
In a final still from the video, Spears reprises her role as a waitress, but unlike the perky pigtailed server she played in (You Drive Me) Crazy,”” this time she vamps it up in black leather and a brunet wig.
The song is the first single off her new album, Circus, set to come out on December 2, her 27th birthday. “Womanizer” made its radio debut on September 26 on New York’s Z100. The following week, Spears stopped by the station to talk about the song. “['Womanizer' is] basically saying, ‘We know what you’re up to.’ It’s about guys cheating on girls,” she said. “It’s a girl anthem. That’s why I like it. So, hopefully, the fans will see it that way too!”
She also revealed that she has plans to tour in support of Circus in 2009. “Oh, definitely next year,” she said when asked about touring possibilities. “Probably around the world.”

Metallica To Perform At Los Premios MTV Latin America 2008

In the weeks leading up to the release of their latest LP, Death Magnetic,
Metallica did very little in the way of actual promotion for the effort. They didn’t make the late-night TV rounds or appear on any talk shows. The album’s September 12 release date came and went with very little fanfare — and the record still went on to scan close to 500,000 units in just three days, earning Metallica their fifth-consecutive chart-topping debut.
Four weeks later, the album has passed the million-sold mark and will be at #5 on the Billboard albums chart next week. And even though they’re not hurting for publicity, Metallica will make their first North American live television performance of the year (they have appeared on TV in the U.K.). On October 16, the band will take the stage when the annual Los Premios MTV Latino America 2008 take over Guadalajara, Mexico. The awards, which will be held inside the Auditorio Telmex, will air live at 9 p.m. ET, only on MTV Tr3s. Metallica will be performing the first single from Death Magnetic, “The Day That Never Comes.”
“Metallica is the biggest hard rock band in the world — period,” said Jose Tillan, senior vice president of content and music for MTV/VH1 Latin America. “We are honored to have them play at Premios this year. If you have never seen Metallica play, you are in for a heart-stopping experience. My ears are still ringing from the last time I saw them live a couple of years ago!” Others acts to appear at this year’s awards include performers Tokio Hotel, Paramore, Katy Perry, the Kooks, Moderatto, Calle 13, Café Tacuba, Julieta Venegas and others; presenters include Gene Simmons, Flavor Flav, Tila Tequila and 30 Seconds to Mars.
And if catching Metallica’s sole television performance of 2008 isn’t enough to get you to tune in, consider the award being handed out this year for Song of the Year. The Jonas Brothers’ “When You Look Me in the Eyes” is in the running, along with Katy Perry’s “I Kissed a Girl,” Juanes’ “Me Enamora,” Tokio Hotel’s “Monsoon” and Julieta Venegas’ “El Presente.” The JoBros were also nominated in the Best International Pop Artist category, with Amy Winehouse, Fergie, Madonna and Rihanna, while Fall Out Boy, 30 Seconds to Mars, Coldplay, Panic at the Disco and Paramore are all in the running for Best International Rock Artist.
The Jonases may also walk away from the October 16 event with another award for Best New International Artist. Alizée, Katy Perry, Paramore and Tokio Hotel are also nominated in that category.

Paris Hilton Is Back On The Campaign Trail, Seeking ‘Fake President’ Advice In New Video
In latest Funny or Die clip, ‘West Wing’ star Martin Sheen tells the heiress she’s ‘going to make a great fake president.’

Paris Hilton is totally running for fake president, and she totally wants your fake vote. Totally.
That’s the message in a video posted early Wednesday (October
on FunnyOrDie.com, which features Hilton seeking political advice from “one of our greatest fake presidents,” Martin Sheen, who played president Josiah Bartlett on NBC’s long-running White House drama “The West Wing.”
In the clip, which takes place in the kitchen during “a pre-party for the party before the afterparty,” Hilton and Sheen discuss such pressing fake issues as “FoPo” (or “foreign policy,” for those of you who don’t speak Paris-ese) and the economy, with P stating that she favors a timetable for withdrawal from Iraq and lowering interest rates to bail out homeowners.
“This is the biggest depression since ‘The Notebook,’ ” Hilton says. “How about helping the people who are losing their homes? How about lowering inflated interest rates so it’s not impossible for them to pay their mortgage? I know its not as much money for the banks, but it’s better than no money at all. Just ask MC Hammer.”
Sheen proclaims, “Loves it,” and then tells Hilton not to worry, because she’s “going to make a great fake president.”
Hilton then says, “America was at its best when it was on NBC,” to which Sheen replies, “Wait till it’s on MTV” (hey, that’s us!). Hilton then turns to the camera and proclaims, “See you at the fake inauguration, bitches!”
The clip is the second one Hilton has done for the humor Web site. Back in August, she caused a sensation when she posted her response to an early John McCain campaign ad comparing Barack Obama to Hilton and Britney Spears.

Ciara Invites T-Pain, Ne-Yo, Missy Elliott Aboard Her Fantasy Ride
‘This album has opened up a little bit with different vibes and energies,’ singer says from ‘Go Girl’ video set.

Ciara keeps the female-empowerment message alive on “Go Girl,” the first single from her upcoming album, Fantasy Ride. The R&B songbird said the song, which features T-Pain on the hook, is all about “someone that’s strong, determined and independent.”
“T-Pain is a really cool guy, so I enjoyed the whole process,” she told MTV News on the set of the video. “I just wanted to make it a bit easier, ’cause the Fantasy Ride is a world of fantasy and fun. There’s just so many different worlds I want to take my fans.”
T-Pain had mutual love for Ciara. “The record came together basically with me and Ciara working for days in the studio, and we got pressured to … make a song,” he said. “The one we finished was ‘Go Girl.’ We had a lot of fun. She was dancing. I was trying to dance as good as her!”
Ciara is preaching control on the song and in her professional life. The 22-year-old singer took the reins as the album’s executive producer, getting everyone from Ne-Yo to Missy Elliott to Young Jeezy to make cameos. “I have a song with Missy, and it’s crazy and out of this world,” she said. “The energy is to the 10th power again.”
Ciara also invited some fresh faces aboard the Fantasy Ride. “I worked with Danja [and] a lot of new producers, too, which I’m really excited about,” she said. “There’s nothing like new, fresh talent. This album has opened up a little bit with different vibes and energies. I wanted to bring in different writers. I’m excited.”
The biggest theme fans will find on the album is Ciara’s burgeoning womanhood (something that caused controversy during her recent cover shot for Vibe, for which the singer insisted she was clothed and the magazine insisted she wasn’t). “I’m definitely embracing myself more and more each day as a woman,” she said. “It’s a feeling you can’t really describe fully, but I know I feel good, and I’m learning more about myself every day as a woman.”

Britney Spears Rejects Plea Deal, Faces Trial October 15 For Driving Without License
Deal would have put singer on year’s probation with $150 fine.

Pop star Britney Spears will be heading to trial next week to face charges of misdemeanor driving without a license, her attorney J. Michael Flanagan told MTV News on Wednesday (October 8), just hours after he rejected a plea deal that would have placed Spears on a year’s probation and required she pay a $150 fine.
According to Flanagan, he has advised his client, who did not appear in court on Wednesday, to go forward with the trial should the prosecution fail to offer a better deal. He said he’d consider an offer that would reduce the charge to a traffic infraction with a $10 fine. Otherwise, the case is scheduled to begin on October 15, and Flanagan said he’d appeal any conviction in the case.
The charge stems from a minor accident involving Spears last summer, during which the pop star struck a parked car and drove off, though paparazzi captured the incident on video. Initially, Spears was also slapped with a hit-and-run charge that was later dismissed after she paid to have the other vehicle repaired.
Flanagan said he doesn’t think Spears deserves a conviction on her criminal record, especially not a misdemeanor charge.
The rejection comes less than 24 hours after an appeals court denied Flanagan’s efforts to dismiss the misdemeanor charge altogether and have the criminal case put on hold. In court papers, Flanagan argued that his client, whose personal and business affairs are currently under the control of conservatorship, was “currently unable to participate meaningfully” in the trial.
Meanwhile, she has been able to participate meaningfully in the making of a video for her new single, “Womanizer.”

T.I. Ends Metallica’s Billboard Reign With Paper Trail
Jennifer Hudson, Robin Thicke and Jack’s Mannequin also debut in top 10.

With four huge, high-profile releases hitting record stores last week, Metallica’s run at #1 was expected to expire Wednesday morning (October 8), when Nielsen SoundScan released the latest album sales figures, gleaned from retailers all across the nation. And as predicted, rapper T.I.’s Paper Trail has, indeed, dethroned the heavy metal icons’ Death Magnetic to take control of next week’s Billboard top 200. With sales registered at 568,000 and change, Paper Trail also marks the best first week of any of the rapper’s releases.
While Paper Trail becomes T.I.’s third-straight LP to open at #1, he managed to shatter his own sales record, eclipsing those generated by 2006’s King, which opened on top with nearly 522,000 sold, and 2007’s T.I. vs. T.I.P., which entered the chart at #1 with about 468,000 scans. T.I. managed to outsell Oscar-winning “American Idol” alum Jennifer Hudson’s self-titled debut, which bows at #2 with 217,000 sold, and the latest from Robin Thicke, Something Else. That album follows at #3, having sold 137,000 units. James Taylor’s Covers is also new to next week’s chart, debuting at #4 with 95,000 sold.
That means Metallica’s Death Magnetic slides to #5 on next week’s chart, with week-four sales reported at 86,000. The good news for Metallica is that that figure pushes total sales of the disc past the 1 million mark, making the album one of the year’s best-selling rock sets. Ne-Yo’s Year of the Gentleman follows at #6 with 70,000 scans, while Kid Rock’s Rock N Roll Jesus holds at #7, selling another 56,000 units. Jazmine Sullivan’s Fearless lands at #10 with 42,000 sold.
T.I.’s latest was one of six new releases to enter the chart in the top 10 and one of 33 total newcomers to impact next week’s chart. Jack’s Mannequin’s Glass Passenger will debut at #8 with 49,000 sold, while “American Idol” alumni Kellie Pickler’s self-titled latest enters at #9, selling 43,000.
T.I. has another release debuting on next week’s chart, but this one opens at #125 with just 5,000 sold. Called A King of Oneself, the six-song EP was sold exclusively to Best Buy customers who bought a copy of Paper Trail.
Ben Folds‘ Way to Normal just misses the top 10, coming in at #11 next week with 40,000 scans, while Anberlin’s New Surrender follows at #13 with week-one sales of 36,000. Nightmare Revisited, a compilation featuring the likes of Marilyn Manson, Flyleaf, Korn, Rise Against and others covering the tunes from Disney’s “The Nightmare Before Christmas,” enters the chart at #31, having sold 19,000 copies, while Murs‘ Murs for President opens at #43 with 12,000 sold.
It was a big week for metal releases. Trivium’s Shogun will bow at #23 with 24,000 sold, while Amon Amarth’s Twilight of the Thunder God enters at #48 with 11,400 sold. In This Moment’s The Dream scanned 8,200 copies to open at #70, while Bleeding Through’s Declaration follows at #101 with 5,800 sold.
Elsewhere on the chart, we find James Morrison’s Songs for You, Truths for Me entering at #47 with more than 11,400 sold, while Faith Hill’s Joy to the World follows at #49 with 11,300 scans. The soundtrack to “Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist” debuts at #50, having sold 11,100 units, while Bayside’s Shudder claims the #52 spot, selling just under 11,100. Ani DiFranco’s Red Letter Year trails at #53 with 10,600 sold, while Tina Turner’s Tina! bows at #59 with 9,700 scans.
Enigma return to the top 200 at #89, with Seven Lives Many Faces selling 6,400, while Big Kuntry King’s My Turn to Eat enters at #95 with 6,000 sold. Dem Franchize Boyz‘ Our World, Our Way opens at #115 with 5,200 sold, and at #119, with 5,200 sold, it’s Heltah Skeltah’s D.I.R.T. The sophomore offering from Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello’s side project, the Nightwatchman, called Fabled City, debuts at #179, having sold 3,600 units.

Beyonce Finally Opens Up About Marriage To Jay-Z
‘What Jay and I have is real. It’s not about interviews or getting the right photo op,’ the singer says.
By Jennifer Vineyard
Beyoncé in the November issue of Essence magazine
Photo: Matt Jones/Essence Magazine
Beyoncé usually spends a lot of time not talking about Jay-Z. Even magazines that tout some exclusive interview in which she’s finally opened up only have a snippet or two, and usually they are about her decision to not talk.
So you would have every reason to be wary when yet another magazine — this time Essence — comes along and claims that the singer has broken her infamous silence. Except in this case, she has.
After several pages about Beyoncé’s decision not to speak publicly about her private life — peppered with lots of so-called expert opinion from an associate professor of communications and anthropology, a blogger, an unnamed media insider, the singer’s acting coach and even her mother — the magazine finally gets down to business.
(Read what Beyoncé told Essence about her upcoming album and movie roles here.)
Up to this point, Beyoncé led the magazine to believe she wouldn’t be really opening up to them either: “Interviewing Beyoncé, who has admitted she dislikes the process, is a little like talking to your mother about sex. There may be a pretense of open communication, but the subtext is clear: Are you seriously going to ask me that? … For now, Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s relationship exists in that no-man’s land where they won’t give us anything and we can’t get enough.”
So at first, Essence settles for the usual discussion about her effort to maintain her privacy, which Beyoncé claims is so she can keep some mystery, stay sane and control her brand — though not necessarily in that order.
“I feel that, especially now, with the Internet and paparazzi and camera phones, it’s so difficult to maintain mystery,” she told the magazine. “And that’s so important. Even in a relationship, I feel like not being that accessible is really important. If you think about Prince or Michael Jackson, or any superstars, you couldn’t see them when they got off their planes or when they got out of the pool and didn’t comb their hair. It’s great that people see we’re not perfect. But it’s almost impossible to have superstars now, because people will never get enough. And it’s not even about my music. It’s about all the things that people imagine about me in their minds. But I can’t satisfy everyone. I know that Jay and I probably do inspire people. And I appreciate people feeling proud. But this is the only way I’ve been able to stay sane, so why would I start talking now?
“[Not speaking] controls your brand,” she continued. “It controls what you want to put out there and kind of forces people to talk about what you want them to talk about.”
But then Beyoncé lets it slip that it was a joint decision with her husband to keep quiet. “We decide everything,” she told the magazine. “My word is my word. What Jay and I have is real. It’s not about interviews or getting the right photo op. It’s real.”
But the writer persisted. And normally, this would be just the thing to get Beyoncé to shut down or call off the interview or find some excuse to change the subject. Instead, she groaned. “You’re gonna get me in trouble,” she complained, and then launched into a slew of details about the couple’s private wedding that the public has been craving for her to acknowledge — to the point that some have referred to it as a secret wedding, despite the very public-record nature of these things.
Beyoncé tells the magazine that the wedding was very small and intimate, because she’s not a “traditional” woman and having it be “her day” wasn’t something she needed. Being a star and walking the red carpet has diminished the need for that over the years. “It’s been my day so many days already,” she told the magazine.
She didn’t want an engagement ring because “people put too much emphasis on that. It’s just material, and it’s just silly to me,” she said.
Instead of just getting wedding rings, the couple also got matching tattoos of the Roman numeral four on their ring fingers, so if they take off the bands for work or to go swimming, a mark of some form is still there. (The number four is special to the couple because her birthday is September 4, his birthday is December 4, and their wedding anniversary is April 4.)
While she wouldn’t discuss how Hova proposed, or even if he proposed (”We’ve been together a long time. We always knew it would happen,” is all she would offer), Beyoncé did reveal this: They plan to have kids. Someday. And perhaps as soon as after she puts out this album.

DJ AM’s Friends Mark Ronson, Mix Master Mike, Others To Throw ‘Welcome Home’ Party
Proceeds from October 14 show go to memorial fund for victims of September plane crash.

As DJ AM continues to recover from second- and third-degree burns he suffered in last month’s plane crash in South Carolina, his fellow DJs are making sure he’s getting the kind of homecoming party he deserves.
Mark Ronson, Steve Aoki, Danny Masterson and Mix Master Mike are just some of AM’s friends confirmed to perform at the Welcome Home DJ AM party, to be held October 14 at Avalon Hollywood. Tickets for the event are $20, and all proceeds will go to the memorial funds established in the names of the four people who were killed in the accident.
In a statement to People.com, event organizers said that AM (born Adam Goldstein) has been “a close friend … for many years,” and that the party is being organized not just as a fundraiser, but because his friends feel they “owe him a debt of gratitude that we can never repay, but we hope this helps just a bit.”
The September 19 Learjet crash claimed the lives of four people, including Travis Barker’s assistant, Chris Baker, and his security guard, Charles Still, as well as pilot Sarah Lemmon and co-pilot James Bland.
Both Barker and AM escaped the crash with burns and are expected to make a full recovery. Less than a week after the crash, AM was released from Georgia’s M. Still Burn Center and returned home to Los Angeles. Barker was released from the same facility last week, and recently spoke to Us Weekly about the crash, telling the magazine that he is “thankful to be alive.”
